Today's Word of Wonder: Abiding
The Scripture for Today
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
— John 15:5 (NIV)
The Devotion: From Effort to Union
We live in a world that asks, "What have you done today?" Unfortunately, we often bring that same "work-order" mentality into our relationship with God. We think we have to do for Christ in order to be in Christ. We try to manufacture fruit like "love" or "patience" through sheer willpower, only to end up exhausted and dry.
But Jesus offers a radical shift in perspective. He doesn't call us "Employees"; He calls us "Branches."
Think about a branch on a grapevine. Does the branch wake up in the morning and stress about how it’s going to produce a grape? Does it strain and struggle to grow? No. A branch simply is. Its only "job" is to stay connected to the Vine. As long as it abides (remains), the life-giving sap of the Vine flows into it naturally, and the fruit happens as a byproduct of that connection.
The WOW Moment today is realizing that "Doing" is the result of "Being." When you focus on your union with Jesus—sitting in His presence, resting in His love, and acknowledging Him throughout your day—you don't have to work to be fruitful. You become fruitful. Your "doing" becomes an overflow of His life in you, rather than a frantic effort to please Him. Today, you aren't a laborer trying to earn a wage; you are a branch simply resting in the Vine.
Wonder Prompt (Actionable Reflection)
Look at your to-do list for today. How much of it feels like "striving" in your own strength?
- Action: Practice the "Abiding Breath." Take a deep breath in and whisper: "I am in You." Breathe out and whisper: "You are in me." Do this several times today to remind your soul that you are a branch, not the gardener.
- Shift: Instead of saying "I have to do this for God," try saying "I get to do this with God."
- Prayer: "Lord, forgive me for trying to produce fruit apart from You. I stop the striving today. I choose to simply remain in You, trusting that Your life in me is enough to do everything I need to do. Amen."
