Today's Word of Wonder: Desire

The Scripture Spotlight for Today

"1 You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. 2 I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. 3 Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. 4 I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands."

— Psalm 63:1-4 (NIV)

The Devotion: The Thirst That Leads to Life

David wrote this psalm while he was literally hiding in the desert of Judah—a dry, parched, and dangerous land. His circumstances were physically desperate, but his focus was intensely spiritual. He wasn't just thirsty for water; he was thirsty for God.

Today, you might not be in a physical desert, but you might feel spiritually dry. The land of endless scrolling, constant striving, and daily demands can leave our souls just as parched. We seek satisfaction in achievement, relationships, or possessions, only to find that the thirst returns, stronger than before.

Today's WOW scripture commands us to redirect that powerful, natural yearning toward its only true source: God himself. David sought God earnestly, longing for Him with his whole being—his heart, soul, and strength (Deuteronomy 6:5).

The reason this pursuit is so vital is found in verse 3: "Because your love is better than life." When we compare the temporary pleasures of the world to the eternal satisfaction of God's love, the choice becomes clear. His love is the only source that completely quenches the soul's deepest Desire.

A WOW Moment is realizing that your deepest longings are intentional—they are a sign that you were made for Intimacy (Psalm 27:8) with God. When you find Him, you find satisfaction that results in unstoppable Praise (verse 4). Don't ignore the thirst today; let it lead you to the living water.

Wonder Prompt (Actionable Reflection)

Think of one thing you often reach for when you feel spiritually "dry" (e.g., food, entertainment, distraction).

  • This week, commit to replacing that immediate reach with intentional thirst.

  • Action: Before you reach for the distraction, spend 60 seconds focusing only on the phrase: "I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you." How does this redirection of Desire change your next action?
